The economic recovery is well underway in Las Vegas, Nevada, where near-record numbers of tourists visited in 2011. Officials are forecasting that the tourist season in 2012 will be just as strong. Responsible in large part is the fact that today's Vegas has a wealth of attractions that appeal to the whole family. Many of these fun-filled venues are located inside Las Vegas hotels, while others are further afield. This poses no problem, however, since Las Vegas car hire is widely available.
The Adventuredome Theme Park
Located at the Circus Circus casino on the Strip, this enormous lavender-hued dome is the largest indoor amusement park in the US, occupying almost six acres filled with thrilling rides and carnival-style games and booths. The daring “Sling Shot” riders experience four Gs as it flings them up toward the pink glass ceiling, while the “Canyon Blaster” roller coaster thrills riders with its double loop and a double corkscrew – the only roller coaster in the US to feature both. In addition to high-speed rides, the Aventuredome contains an IMAX Ride Film called the Fun House Express that takes you on the journey of a demented clown through the interior of a fun house. There are also physical activities available including a climbing wall.
The Ethel M. Chocolate Factory and Gardens
Located about 10 miles from the major casinos, this attraction is an extensive botanical garden and a chocolate factory tour rolled into one. Best of all, it is entirely free of charge. Here, tourists enjoy a guided presentation that explains in detail the process of making fine chocolate bonbons. Each visitor is given a sample chocolate at the end of the tour, after which tourists can exit to explore a desert garden complete with dozens of examples of various cacti species.
The Gondola Ride at the Venetian
For a taste of Italy in the New World, visit the Grand Canal Shops located at the Strip's Venetian Hotel and Casino. Children aged two years and under can ride the gondola free of charge, and both indoor and outdoor gondolas traverse the canal until late at night. Just like in Venice, you may get a singing gondolier to entertain you as you glide along the crystal waters of the sunken canal.
The Lion Habitat at the MGM Grand
The lion is the well-known symbol of MGM Movie Studios and at their Vegas hotel-casino real lions are on display. The attraction is open each day from 11 a.m. The best time for families to visit is 15 minutes after opening or at half past four in the afternoon, since these are the lions’ feeding times. The attraction is free to guests of all ages and is perfectly safe, with these magnificent beasts enclosed behind thick glass in a habitat that cost almost $10 million to build.
The Secret Garden
Another popular wildlife attraction for families taking flights to Las Vegas is the Secret Garden at the Mirage. A single admission charge provides a chance to see leopards, tigers, and panthers sunning themselves in the sultry warmth of Nevada. The Secret Garden even has a dolphin pool.
There is no place like Las Vegas for a family holiday filled with fun and interest.
